This afternoon, the Orioles lost 6-5 to the Minnesota Twins; however, the biggest news of the day happened real early in the game as pitcher Brad Bergesen got drilled with a line during the 4th pitch of the game (and didn’t make it past the first batter, Denard Span).
Considering how shaky Bergesen has been throughout March, today’s start was very important to him – and the team. Right now, the only thing that the tests and X-Rays found were a contusion, but it could have been much, much worse. Who knows if he will be ready for Spring Training, or if things turn out to be serious; however, the Orioles may have dodged a bullet.
The Twins did all their damage in the second inning in which they plated six runs. Reliever Mike Ballard – who came in for Bergesen – got crushed thanks to a two-run homer by Delmon Young, and runs driven in by Mike Cuddyer, Matt Tolbert and Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Justin Morneau had an RBI sacrifice-fly.
Although the Orioles got a two-run homer from Adam Jones, and longballs – solo – by Jake Fox (his freaking ninth of the Spring) and Nolan Remiold, it was too little, too late for the Orioles.
I have not done this for a good, long while, but here’s a tour around the Orioles interweb – as James would call Al Gore’s so-called invention (not really…)
The Orioles Hangout’s Doc Shorebird has a great interview with prospect Manny Machado; Ryan Chell from WNST is looking forward to Opening Day; Camden Chat has started doing a podcast and hopefully we’ll all be hearing more in the weeks to come; Demspey’s Army wonders if Curt Schilling had stayed an Oriole; Roar from 34 mixes pro wrestling – a cool pastime of mine back in the day – and baseball; numbers guy Dan Moroz from Camden Crazies wonders about Buck Showalter as does Oriole Central, ESPN, Pressbox Online, MASN’s Steve Melewski and Orioles Nation.
Nestor from WNST wants Showalter to keep his mouth shut; meanwhile, the Bad Oriole thinks that Nestor is a D-Bag.
It’s amazing that Buck is probably the best known member of the Baltimore Orioles right now. I think his words were nothing short of just chatter to a reporter, but if it brings the team more attention, it can’t be a bad thing – right?
Then again, Buck is trying to move the focus away from his now infamous comments.
As well, Eutaw Street & Beyond wonders down the road … in 2014; Weaver’s Tantrum wonders about the team heading into next week; the Wayward O looks at the AL East in ’11; the Oriole Report analyzes the latest cuts; Camden Depot wonders about the Orioles’ finances; Jen Royle is moving on from MASN and will be co-hosting a baseball show weeknights; and finally…
Here’s a video interview that Adam Jones did with the Baltimore Sun. He doesn’t take it too well when Camden Yards is invaded by fans of the Evil Empire and the Red Sox Nation.
Wow. I really don’t know what to say. I guess we all love when our athletes come out of their shell and show some candor instead of canned comments/thoughts, but Adam… I have to say again, wow…
I will be coming back to him later this weekend, if not sooner. He’s been awfully chatty and very outspoken as of late.
