The Winter Meetings, John Russell, Willie Randolph and More…

The Winter Meetings kick off today in Orlando this morning and who knows what will result from it. Some deals may be made and there will be a whole lot of rumors; however, the next few days should add more intrigue to the off-season.

Right now, the biggest news out of Birdland is that the Baltimore Sun reported manager Buck Showalter offered former Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell either the bench or third base coaching position. I would figure Russell would choose the bench position, as he was a former manager.

Really, I think the details and financials of the contract just have to be worked out. Who knows, maybe Willie Randolph – who was with Showalter on the Yankees – might join the black and orange.

Who cares if Randolph was a former Yankee. The Orioles need some new blood and he’s been a winner. Ok, so Randolph’s Mets’ tenure was a bit mixed and the way he axed was complete BS.

Also, in other tidbits out of the coaching carousel, it looks like the Milwaukee Brewers have inked deals with John Shelby, Jerry Narron and Rick Kranitz – who was hired by the Astros earlier in the month – to join their coaching ranks.

Speaking about the Hot Stove, people are wondering if the O’s will attempt to trade for Zack Grienke considering that seemingly half the league wants someone of his caliber? Personally, I would make the deal; however, I wonder if he would be interested in Baltimore and also being placed on yet another rebuilding squad. His 2009 Cy Young season speaks for itself, but he fell off a bit in 2010. Regardless, Greinke is a potential star in the making and he needs to do is stay consistent and motivated.

Plus, you’ve got to wonder if his history will repeat itself with his anxiety issues and if he could handle even more potential losing. In addition, what would the Orioles have to give up? If it has to be some prospects – so be it.

If I were a general manager, I would strongly consider making the move if Grienke is interested in signing a long-term contract with Baltimore.

Finally, Brian Matusz finished fifth in the AL Rookie of the Year voted. As figured, Neftali Feliz earned the honor yesterday.
