The Orioles brief two-game win streak came to a crashing halt as the New York Yankees beat them, 8-3.
New York pretty much decided the game within an hour as they scored six runs in the first three innings off a shaky Jeremy Guthrie, who fell to 0-3 on the season. The hurler who has shown some promise this season after a horrible 2009, struggled again. He only lasted 4 2/3 innings and was charged with seven runs – six earned, plus hit a batter (Jorge Posada who left the game soon after being hit on the knee).
Of course, Joe Girardi was none too pleased to see his star catcher hit; however, Guthrie did apologize for beaning Posada and his poor night on the mound.
On the other hand, Yankee starter C.C. Sabathia won for the third time season as he went 7 2/3 innings and gave up three runs; however, he gave up 11 hits. He wasn’t sharp in the least, but once again, the Orioles could do little against him.
Baltimore scored a run in the third inning off an RBI-groundout from Miguel Tejada and another in the sixth off a Nolan Reimold sacrifice fly.
Nick Markakis hit his first homer of the season in the seventh inning; however, the Orioles didn’t do much after that.
Much like the night before, the attendance at Camden Yards last night was surprising yet again. Watching on MASN, the amount of people in the crowd at Camden Yards was stunning.
Only 17,248 for a Yankee game? I don’t think I can ever recall seeing a number that low in terms of a crowd when they come into town.
In other news, despite the doom and gloom with the big club, Oriole prospect Chris Tillman threw a no-hitter against the Gwinnett Braves as a member of the Triple-A Norfolk tides. He threw 105 pitches and issued only one walk.
Also, could Koji Uehara be returning sooner rather than later? He pitched yesterday for Norfolk and threw an inning this morning for Double-A Bowie. So far, he’s looked good, but it’s yet to be seen when he’ll come back up to Baltimore.
