I’ll have more in the morning, as I literally just got home. What a long night.
In the midst of a four game losing skid, the Orioles finally won on Tuesday night, defeating the Seattle Mariners, 7-6 in a crazy 13 inning thriller. It was ugly at times, but the fans who came out to Camden Yards last night sure got their money’s worth.
The Orioles are now 15-19 on the season and there’s nothing like free baseball.
They took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning, gave it up, but yet battled and grinded the night away to emerge victorious. The Orioles had umpteen men on base and could have blown the game open several times, but in the end, everything ended up all roses. Felix Pie and Matt Wieters drove in the deciding and winning run in the bottom of the 13th off Seattle reliever Brandon League.
The offense came through when it counted, as Matt Wieters went 2-for-7; meanwhile, Adam Jones (who drove in three runs), Vladmir Guerrero and Nick Markakis had three hits.
J.J. Hardy — in his first game off the disabled list — had four hits and hit a solo homer in his first-at-bat.
Tuesday’s contest had a little bit of everything — guys thrown out on the bases, blown leads, comebacks, amazing plays, strong defense, and a bench clearing incident (thanks to Seattle first baseman Justin Smoak laying a hard tag on Felix Pie in the tenth inning).
Jake Arrieta put forth a good effort starting on the mound for the Orioles, going six innings and giving up two runs, while the bullpen was shaky. Rookie sensation Michael Pineda went six innings and gave up three runs in his start for Seattle.
Jeremy Accardo got the win for Baltimore, while the aforementioned Brandon League got the loss.
