As we all know, the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankee played another epic, extra-inning game – this time, lasting 13. This has been a memorable five-game ALDS series, and it’s a shame that someone will have to lose. Although the Orioles and Yankees have not been doing too well at the plate, the pitching performances on the part of both franchises are nothing short of impressive. At this time of year, everyone seems to step up their game, and this week has been no exception.
In the end, the Orioles bested the Yankees, 2-1, thanks to a J.J. Hardy RBI-double that plated Manny Machado in the top of the 13th inning, a clutch performance by Joe Saunders on the mound, and an out-of-this world performance by the bullpen – especially by Darren O’Day and previously elusive Pedro Strop. Both teams have been unable to do much at the plate in clutch situations and the big boppers are struggling; however, both teams are now very evenly matched.
Later on tonight, one of these two teams will be heading to face the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS. The Yankees – on paper – should have trounced the Orioles; however, the Birds of Baltimore have been playing with house money and magic on their side. Most people have wondered, “how, in the hell are the Orioles this good?”
Then again, they are as good as the Yankees now. Baltimore’s roster has been pieced together all throughout the season, and they are depending on Jason Hammel – who was not even pitching two weeks ago – to start on the mound against C.C. Sabathia.
They will need the magic to reappear again for one more day. Fans also have to be concerned how the Baltimore bullpen is being used; however, they have been the glue holding this team together.
I expect all should be fine with the Orioles, but they have to take advantage of every opportunity they get at the plate. They could have finished off this series on Wednesday if they had just done that.
With that being said, I’m on my way to New York and hope to see the Orioles make it to the next round of the playoffs. If they don’t, there’s no shame – it’s amazing they’ve made it this far and no one should be angered by that.
At this least time, if the Yankees do win today and advance, they would have earned the privilege.
Finally, I’ve heard that many people in the region are not that impressed with Cal Ripken on the TBS broadcasts.
