Orioles Start off Their Series With the Jays in the Win Column

What started off as a lovely Memorial Day with the sun out and warm ended as a grey, damp, soggy afternoon; however, the Orioles overcame the poor conditions out and defeated the Blue Jays, 4-1, to kick off the three game set at Camden Yards. Honestly, I thought the game was going to put into a rain delay, but for some reason, the umpires decided to make a go of it, and both teams did complete the game.

Jeremy Guthrie had to endure some horrific conditions on the mound — specifically towards the end of the game — to earn his fourth win of the season. He performed like a trooper as he went seven innings and only yielded a single run — via a RBI single by Vernon Wells in the first inning. Meanwhile, Guthrie’s opponent on the mound — Brian Tallet — went six innings and gave up two runs in a solid performance, but took the loss. George Sherill got the save — his 10th.

Baltimore tied the game in the first inning as Nick Markakis grounded into a double play, but plated in a run and they broke the tie in the fourth as Gregg Zaun had an RBI single. They added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh off former Oriole and current Blue Jay reliever B.J. Ryan as Brian Roberts had an RBI triple, and Aubrey Huff plated in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Roberts left the game in the eighth inning as he suffering from a bruised shin (or a contusion as I have heard on the radio) as he got tangled at second base by Toronto’s Rod Barajas — who slid and spiked Roberts accidentally in the second inning.

It looks like mystery of Tuesday’s starting pitcher has been solved as Baltimore called up Jason Berken.
