O’s Lose to the White Sox; Simon Out for a Long Time…

Last night, the Orioles could not replicate what they did the day before and got beat badly by the Chicago White Sox, 8-2. Baltimore faced a tough customer in John Danks and he brough it on Wednesday as he tossed seven innings, and alllowed just one run on four hits. Amazingly, he retired 19 out of the last 21 batters he faced, and it seemed that the Orioles were not going to get anything from him at all to really hit.

After looking good for the first two weeks of the season, Jeremy Guthrie did not look good again after seeing the Red Sox this weekend. Guthrie allowed the White Sox to score in the top of the the first, and allowed two more in the second inning. The Orioles fell behind 4-0 as Jim Thome took the Baltimore starter deep. Dennis Sarfate gave up a two-run homer in the seventh inning and another run to put the game out of reach for the Orioles.

Both Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis (in the midst of a nine-game hit streak) had two hits. Ty Wigginton and Luke Scott each drove in runs for Baltimore.

In other news, it looks like Alfredo Simon is done for a while and perhaps for a long time. According to Peter Schmuck:

No. 3 starting pitcher Alfredo Simon told reporters today that he will undergo elbow surgery that figures to cost him the remainder of the 2009 season. Simon made two starts after winning a place in the rotation with a strong spring. Simon consulted with Orioles orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens and Birmingham, Ala., specialist James Andrews before making the decision in consultation with his agent.

He came up sore early in his second start and was diagnosed as having “degenerative tissue” in his pitching elbow. He has been replaced in the rotation by right-hander Brad Bergesen, who recorded his first victory in his major league debut on Tuesday night.
