Ah, man, do I ever miss the oft-injured Erik Bedard in the black and the orange. MacPhail has looked like a genius time-and-time again for the trade of our former southpaw ace, and he’s been giving the gift of glib to the Seattle press.
Well, now, we have may a classic quote from the Canadian God of the mound…
PEORIA, Ariz. — It wouldn’t be entirely accurate to say Erik Bedard hopes his injury woes are fully behind him.
That’s exactly where the Mariners pitcher has felt the most pain this past week — in his behind. Bedard hadn’t pitched in a Cactus League game since March 5 after his gluteus maximus muscle tightened up on him and made it difficult for the left-hander to throw.
Bedard finally got back in a game Monday, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in an inning of work as a Seattle split-squad beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3, in 10 innings. He gave up a triple to Orlando Hudson, a run-scoring single to Russell Martin, then the walk and only escaped further trouble on a double-play lineout.
“I was just trying to feel healthy,” he said. “I was just throwing pitches, trying to get people out as I do usually.”
Knowing he’s been the “butt” of jokes the past week, Bedard also offered up the following medical assessment: “My ass feels good and that’s that.”
Boy, was he ever anti-social, and some of the Baltimore press really disliked him; however, boy, could he ever be funny…
