Jeremy Guthrie finally appeared on the mound for the 2009 Baltimore Orioles this spring and had a good afternoon as the Baltimore Orioles downed the Florida Marlins, 4-2. Aubrey Huff was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs driven in, and Nick Markakis had two hits, both doubles. Baltimore scored twice in the first and third innings, and they got a lot of help from Jeremy Heremida who allowed two doubles to sail over his head.
Melvin Mora drove in the other run.
This was Jeremy’s only start before heading to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, and it was a good one as he threw three innings, struck out three and only gave up a walk. After Guthrie exited, Radhames Liz — a contender for a starting rotation spot — came in and threw innings, and gave up a run off a Heremida double that plated Alfredo Amazega.
Brian Matusz left another solid impression as he threw 1 2/3 of shutout ball as he only allowed one hit, and walked one.
Brian Bass and Jim Hoey finished up the game and each had a shutout inning.
I heard some of the game while doing errands and it’s been interesting hearing what was said on the broadcast about the young talent. Yes, the Orioles might not be competitive in 2009 or even in 2010; however, the young talent — the young arms (Matusz, Arrieta, Tillman and Bergesen) along with the position players (Wieters and Reimold). It will where everyone winds up after camp and who will possibly be up with the big club.
I have not watched the boradcast of MLB’s 30 Clubs in 30 Days featuring the Baltimore Orioles as of yet, but I plan to tonight or sometime this week.
