Brian Roberts Inked to a Deal?

It looks like the Baltimore Orioles and Brian Roberts are close to an extension. Well, at this point I pretty much surmised this was going to happen since the market has fallen, he’s comfortable in Baltimore, one could assme he’s on board now with the rebuilding and the team stuck with him throughout the Mitchell Report.

I’m sure this move will placate of a lot of the fanbase; however, one has to wonder how good he will be when he’s 35 versus 31. The good news is that he seems to keep himself in real good shape and has not spent much time on the shelf aside from when his elbow was literally ripped off his arm in late 2006.

From the Baltimore Sun: The Orioles and second baseman Brian Roberts are close to completing a four-year contract extension that could be announced as early as tomorrow, according to several team sources.

Terms of the deal aren’t known at this point, but one source familiar with the negotiations said that the two sides are “close.” Some details still have to be worked out, the source said, and Roberts will have to pass a team physical, which could take place tomorrow before the first workout of position players.

The Orioles will hold a news conference after the physical to announce the deal with Roberts, a homegrown talent who has developed into a two-time All-Star and one of the game’s better leadoff men, and is arguably the organization’s most popular player.
