Congratulations to Jeremy Guthrie; Other O’s in WBC

Everyone, let’s give our congratulations to Jeremy Guthrie — the newest member of Team USA — who will be playing in the World Baseball Classic in March.

From the Baltimore Sun: Orioles pitcher Jeremy Guthrie has been selected for the final roster of Team USA for next month’s World Baseball Classic.

Guthrie, who went 10-12 with a 3.63 ERA in 2008 and is the lone holdover from last year’s Orioles’ rotation, was informed of the decision late last week. He’ll report to Clearwater, Fla., with the rest of the American team on March 1. They’ll start a three-game exhibition schedule two days later before Team USA opens the tournament against Canada in Toronto on March 7.

“It’s neat to have the opportunity,” Guthrie said this morning. “I’ve never put a jersey on that says USA. So that’s a great honor. It’s obviously very humbling.”

The final U.S. roster, which is expected to include 26 players, will be announced on Feb. 24. Second baseman Brian Roberts and reliever George Sherrill were named to the provisional roster, though it’s unknown at this point whether they’ll make the final roster.

Other Orioles scheduled to play in the classic are Melvin Mora and Cesar Izturis (Venezuela), Lou Montanez & Oscar Salazar (Puerto Rico).
