Ex-O’s in Washington; The Roundup

Peter Schmuck and Rock Kubatko had posts on their respective blogs on how many ex-Orioles have found a home 40 miles south on the Parkway in Washington, D.C.

As most fans know, the Washington Nationals are a team that lost 102 games last year and are trying to find a way to the top in the National League East.

From Roch’s blog: For those of you keeping score at home, the Nationals have added another former Oriole to their camp roster – infielder Alex Cintron, who signed a minor league deal.

By my count, Cintron is the seventh ex-Oriole or farmhand who will suit up for the Nationals in spring training, joining Willie Harris, Daniel Cabrera, Corey Patterson, Freddie Bynum, Josh Towers and Gustavo Molina. Harris and Cabrera are on the 40-man roster.

In response, the Orioles are reportedly in negotiations with Frank Howard.

Cintron and Bynum started at shortstop for the Orioles last season. So did four other players. Go ahead and name them, if you can. Then tell me how many of them are still in the organization.

There’s a reason the aforementioned individuals are not in Baltimore, as they all have a flaw or two or three.

At this point, it looks like the Nationals are trying to catch lightning in a bottle and do it using the cheapest method possible, while filling out some roster space perhaps in the minors.

I’m sure one or two of these guys may find themselves on a major league roster; therefore, with the exception of Harris and Cabrera, everyone else is pretty on a low risk minor league deal.
