A Fan Favorite Heads North of the Border; Pettitte Re-signs…

A fan favorite who defined the word ‘scrappy’ has found a new a home. This afternoon, Brandon Fahey — who won the hearts and minds of some — has gone north of the border and has become a Toronto Blue Jay.

From the AP: TORONTO – Infielder Brandon Fahey and outfielder Jason Lane agreed Monday to minor league contracts with the Toronto Blue Jays and were invited to the team’s major league spring training camp.

Fahey, 28, batted .226 with nine doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs in 58 games last year with the Orioles.

Fahey was a nice person, and always gracious with his time for the fans; however, he didn’t cut it on the Orioles squad and his 2008 season pretty doomed his future with the organization. He got a chance to start — but Fahey just seemed to be overmatched at the plate and suffered at times in the field, especially at short.

He, in my mind, was never a ‘starter’, but a fringe major leaguer — even if he bulked up — who would be the 25th man on a squad, or regulated to a minor league career. I appreciate the hustle and heart he showed, but it was clear to anyone who has seen what was going on in the offseason that his time in Baltimore was up.
